13 Games

Video games are often expensive fun, and you can be disappointed when a game you buy has so little content that you can get through it in no time. But there is also the exact opposite. Some games may even be so long that you have never finished playing them.

We all agree on one thing: games have to be fun and worth the money – then we’ll be satisfied. However, there are also games where you have probably never seen the end because they are just too long. Skyrim and The Witcher 3 are names that fall frequently and are considered to be particularly time-consuming.

Cyberpunk 2077 could also be a candidate for this list because so far the game looks very extensive. Have you already pre-ordered it? If not, please use the following button. This leads you directly to the product page in the PlayStation Store.

The list we have compiled for you is based on both our personal experience and estimates from the How Long to Beat website.

13 extremely long video games

Games should be fun. And not just for a few hours, but as long as possible so that the purchase is really worthwhile. But some developers almost overdo it. We have listed 13 games that you are guaranteed not to have played all of them.

13 games that will eat up all your free time 2
Uncharted

How long should a game actually be? If you like entertaining action and gripping stories, then you will be content with the 15-20 hours of an Uncharted. You may then play through it again in a more difficult mode to find more hidden treasures and unlock even more trophies.

Anyone who likes role-playing games is not satisfied with it. These players expect a game to be entertaining for several dozen hours.

And then there are games that go beyond what you as a player expect. These titles don’t want you to go to work. Or eat. Or sleep. They don’t want you ever to buy another game. Or they just accept that you will never play them through.

In this list, we have taken into account not only our personal experience but also estimates from the How Long to Beat website. Based on user surveys, there are average values that are used to roughly estimate the playing time.

Long video games: The Elder Scrolls 5 – Skyrim

The Elder Scrolls 5 – Skyrim

Do you know anyone who actually claims to have played through a game in the Elder Scrolls series? When we ask our friends, we’re more likely to get answers like, “I played this for 120 hours and never played through the main story.” It’s just too tempting to be distracted. There are always complex side quests that arouse your curiosity. If you do manage to play Skyrim without the distraction, you’ll be busy for about 32 hours. If you want to gamble it through completely, the value is 221 hours.

Long video games: The Legend of Zelda – Breath of the Wild

The Legend of Zelda – Breath of the Wild

Zelda games are generally known for offering long playtime. Even the main story is often quite extensive. Including all the hidden secrets and puzzles, the whole thing takes a lot longer. Nintendo takes collecting to the extreme in Breath of the Wild. With the 120 shrines, 900 hidden Korok seeds and 76 side quests you will be busy for quite a while. Theoretically, you could complete the main quest in 44 hours. If you want to gamble it through completely, you need 168 hours.

Long video games: Pokémon Diamond and Pearl

Pokémon Sun and Moon had more potential Pokémon than any other game in the series, but the 3DS title disappointed in terms of playing time compared to some of its predecessors. 106 hours may not sound like short, but the game does not come close to the largest game in the series. Because for Pokémon Diamond and Pearl you need 42 hours to complete the main quest. If you still want to collect and develop all Pokémon and find all the secrets of the world, you need 247 hours, more than twice as long as for the sun and moon. Personally, however, I’ve played the golden version the longest. I was there for 180 hours.

Long video games: Fallout 4

Fallout 4

Bethesda’s post-apocalyptic action game will also keep you entertained for a long time. Similar to The Elder Scrolls, you are particularly quickly distracted by side quests. Especially the current part can keep you busy for a few weeks. The main story only takes about 25 hours, but the game offers 149 hours of fun for gamers who want to explore everything. In the Game of the Year Edition, the number of hours of Fallout 4 increases to 255. You don’t need to play anything else.

Long video games: Disgaea – Hour of Darkness

Disgaea – Hour of Darkness

Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance can easily keep up. The complete game theoretically offers 168 hours of fun. But it goes even longer, as some older titles in the series prove. Disgaea: Hour of Darkness trumps everything. If you want to play the entire game, you will be busy for about 462 hours. That’s a whopping 19 full days. Japanese developers like extensive gaming fun, it seems.

Long video games: Divinity – Original Sin

Divinity – Original Sin

In Divinity: Original Sin, the length of the main quest is particularly remarkable. Because for that you need over 65 hours. If you want to gamble through everything, you have to invest 110 hours. That’s still possible in comparison to some of the other games on this list.

Long video games: Dark Souls 2

The Souls games are also known for their long playing times. This is not only due to the hard level of difficulty, but it is guaranteed to contribute to it. If you are motivated enough to fight your way through Dark Souls 2, you have to invest 118 hours. Dark Souls 3 is almost short with its 82 hours of gameplay.

Long video games: The Witcher 3 – Game of the Year Edition

The Witcher 3 is known to gamers for its large size. There is so much to discover. And then there was also an extensive DLC, the duration of which puts some stand-alone games in the shade. If you get the Game of the Year Edition, you’ll be busy for a while. You need 183 hours to claim to have gambled through the RPG completely. If you focus on the main story, you have to invest 46 hours.

Long video games: Persona 5

Persona 5

The Persona series is also known for its long playing time. But the current part took off. If you’re after Persona 5, expect to be 95 hours busy – just for the main story. It takes 163 hours to complete the game.

Long video games: Dragon Quest VII

Dragon Quest VII

Dragon Quest VII is particularly convincing due to its long main story. You have to invest over 73 hours to get to the end of the plot. After 123 hours you have played the entire game.

Long video games: Minecraft

Minecraft

Can you express your playing time in Minecraft with a number of hours? At least we can’t. Time hardly matters when you go into the pixel world. Minutes turn into hours and suddenly we have gambled through the night. After a few weeks, you realize that you should play something different again. You distract yourself with other games and ultimately end up in the sandbox game again. With its endless possibilities, Minecraft is easily one of the most extensive games of all time.

Long video games: GTA 5

GTA 5

The playing time of GTA 5 might not sound that impressive: 31 hours for the main story and 77 hours to play it all through. But did you actually finish playing the game? Similar to Minecraft, GTA 5 is also a game that you can continue playing indefinitely. Create a bit of chaos in the streets, chase the police and a few hours have passed. In any case, we don’t know anyone who would claim to have played through the open-world game.

Long video games: World of Warcraft

World of Warcraft

To symbolize all MMORPGs, we have chosen the World of Warcraft. If you devote yourself fully to this game, there won’t be much time for other games. The estimate on How Long to Beat is 3416 hours of playtime. Incidentally, that’s 142 complete days. We can confirm that some of our friends (and our editor-in-chief) can easily keep up. And still, no player has gambled through the game, as the developers are constantly expanding it and it has not yet come to an end.

How are you all doing? How many games from our list have you finished and do you think one or the other game is missing? How many hours of play do you think a game should offer so that it is not too little but also not too much content? Please write to us in the Facebook comments.
