Adapted from the novel series of the same name by the American writer Sara Shepard, Pretty Little Liars was written based on a true event. In an interview with Shepard, she talked about her neighbors being abducted when she was young.
“I think my mom was very impressed with the kidnappings. She kept telling me that our neighbor was kidnapped when she was young. Then I moved to Philadelphia, where I had another friend who was kidnapped as a kid and she never mentioned it. That’s why I was always afraid of being kidnapped. What if someone took you? I remember thinking it would happen.”
The cast could have been much different:
Shay Mitchell, who plays the character of Emily, actually auditioned to play Spencer Hastings. Sasha Pieterse, who plays Alison, was being considered for the role of Hanna Marin, until the director realized that Sasha was 12 years old at the time.

Ashley Tisdale turned down an opportunity to be in the Pretty Little Liars cast. He said he wanted to focus instead on his TV drama Hellcats, which he was starring in at the time.
