Apex Legends chief game designer Daniel Z Klein was fired from Respawn Entertainment in 2007 after his offensive blog posts surfaced. Screenshots of these statements made their way to Twitter last month, containing slurs about women and Africans.
“I was confronted by some terrific posts I wrote on a blog in 2007. I accept the things I said and I’m so angry, sorry, and embarrassed at my younger self for saying them. I hope it’s obvious that I don’t believe in these things anymore,” Klein said on July 28.
Klein’s colleague Ryan K Rigney gave reinforcements to Klein, saying that the comments made by a person in 2007 would not reflect the situation in 2021, and that people grew and developed.
Klein announced in his tweets last night that he was cut off from Respawn.
“As of Friday, I’m no longer working at Respawn. You may or may not have seen the awesome things I said in 2007. I also believe wholeheartedly that the person who said those words should be fired. But I’ve worked so hard to be a better person since then, it’s very difficult now. I’m sorry because I’m under the impression that I will never be able to make up for it. I said racist and sexist things, not because I deeply believed in them, but because I knew they would get a reaction. This is not an excuse, no matter what I believed, the effect of the words I chose was one-to-one.
I say this because no matter how shit-headed I am sometimes, with the help of loving people, I’ve made great progress towards becoming a decent person. If my story helps even an exemplary individual to become better, I have served a purpose. ”
EA has yet to comment on Klein’s firing from Respawn.
We have witnessed before when people write or say things at a young age turn their lives upside down in this way years later. I leave the answers to the questions of whether people change or not, how should the mistakes made years ago affect today 🙂
