iPhone 12 Pro enthusiastic

iPhone 12 Pro enthusiastic:

Who would have thought something like this: Apple’s iPhone 12 Pro still contains an ingenious and hidden function that the manufacturer has not really promoted aggressively so far. So what can the top model do that the simple iPhone 12 can’t? CGH knows the answer.

Apple has been providing a practical AR app on the iPhone since iOS 12 – the measuring tape. Thanks to augmented reality technology, various sizes of various things can be determined by simply pointing the camera towards it and defining the corresponding measuring points. Works quite well, but unfortunately still a bit limited.

Well hidden by Apple: iPhone 12 Pro can measure the height of people

However, users of the new iPhone 12 Pro can now expect a practical expansion of functions, because the measuring tape can now do even more in conjunction with iOS 14. As Apple reveals somewhat hidden in the online manual, it is now also possible to measure the height of a person directly and automatically. According to Apple, this works even if the person is sitting in a chair for it. And how do we have to proceed exactly? Apple explains this in simple steps:

  • Align your iPhone so that the person you want to measure can be seen completely on the screen. After a short time, a line will appear over the head of the person (or over the hair or a hat), and directly below you will see the result of the measurement.
  • Tap the “Take a picture” button if you want to take a photo of your measurement and save it.
  • To save the photo, tap the screenshot in the lower-left corner, then tap “Done” and select “Save to Photos” or “Save to Files”.
iPhone 12 Pro Lidar

That’s what it’s all about: LiDAR in the iPhone 12 Pro

The technical background necessary for the function is not mentioned directly. In order for the measurement to take place, the iPhone must have a LiDAR scanner. Ergo: Since only the new iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max have such a sensor, owners of iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini are left with nothing. However, users of an iPad Pro from the 2020 model year can still look forward to it, because this tablet also has a LiDAR scanner.

Worth mentioning: At the moment only the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro of the new iPhone models are available in stores, pre-orders for the iPhone 12 Pro Max and iPhone 12 mini will start on November 6th at 2 p.m. November.
