Sony announced last week that it had acquired Returnal’s developer, Housemarque, with a surprise statement, and incorporated it into PlayStation Studios. In fact, considering how successful Returnal is, we can say that Sony’s move was very correct. But what we don’t know is that Sony is not alone in this request.
Speaking to Yle broadcast in Finland, CEO Ilari Kuittinen said that the only offer they received for the purchase did not come from Sony, but that there were other companies interested in them. Although Kuittinen does not name names, it is not difficult to guess which of these companies are:
“Here are the names you know: the big players of the industry from China, Sweden and the USA. It still sounds unreal to me that there are people who want to buy us in competition,” said the CEO.
You were able to connect the dots right away, weren’t you? Tencent in China, Embracer Group in Sweden, which are both famous for their aggressive acquisitions. The big player of America must be Microsoft, of course, and no one would be surprised if they made an offer to Housemarque.
“From our conversations it was clear that Sony wanted to buy us because we were doing something that the others weren’t doing,” said Kuittinen, and seems quite pleased with the outcome.
