We’ve watched so many comic book adaptations in the last ten years that it’s impossible to remember most of them instantly. When you add the serials on top of it “Does comics come out of Hollywood or does Hollywood come out of comics?”
I’m starting to run into the paradox. The mass production of cinema is of course a controversial issue, but this is not our aim at the moment. In all this adaptation turmoil James Gunn really manages to get a signature. You may have a hard time remembering most movies right away, but this new Suicide Squad will be in your memory with sweet memories at some point. I think this is exactly James Gunn’s greatest signature.
Guardians of the Galaxy, who showed his skills in combining action and fun with Gunn, it felt good to leave an institution with strict rules like Marvel Studios. What they do with a handful of useless DC characters will lead us to see more out-of-the-box adaptations in the future. Joker we have another great example of 18+ comic book adaptations, although it doesn’t make as big of an impact. Let’s take a look at the movie’s pretty good surprises, what do these weird friends do?
“I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die. . . “
I love country music, because I drive a lot in truck games, they also host very special road adventures. Goosebumps started when Johnny Cash played the Folsom Prison Blues at the very first opening of the movie. Because I can’t think of a better song for our friends being held in prison. The words of Johnny Cash, who almost confessed in his concert in Folsom prison, are actually the best summary of our movie. Whoever chose this music for the opening of the movie deserves a promotion.
We were more or less guessing who the team we saw in the trailers and promotions was. But there was also the first Suicide Squad movie, and things had to change. From the very beginning, James Gunn both gave a nod to David Ayer’s film and signaled that he would make his own way. I thought it would add a very different atmosphere when Idris Elba joined the cast, but I never thought of such a successful performance. There used to be a Rambo game on the NES, it was a pretty bad game but it had a hilarious intro. Rambo, who started the game in jail, was asked “save us”, if you choose to stay in jail, the general said, “Rambo, if you don’t say YES, the game won’t start!” he was forcing us. This is how the adventure begins for Bloodsport.
Democracy? I Shouldn’t Take It, It’s Allergic
The purpose of the team coming together, as you can imagine, is to clean up a dirty job that America can’t get its hands on officially. The team that will be sent to Corto Maltese, a South American country that has just been hit, is not very carefully selected. The name Corto Maltese may be familiar to some comic book lovers, because he was the main character of an Italian comic book published with the same name (the comic book series that was popular in the 70s was also published in our country, if you come across this cult piece, be sure to check it out). Going back to our movie, Bloodsport added a good vibe to the movie, but our other members took the movie to a whole new level.
While James Gunn’s new Groot King Shark finds himself with the voice of Slyvester Stallone, Polka-Dot Man has proven to be a colorful character in every sense. The secret star of the movie, Ratcatcher 2, managed to impress him with Daniela Melchior. Daniela was so good that she managed to steal quite a few roles from Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. John Cena’s Peacemaker, on the other hand, was a good competitor to Bloodsport and had a direct impact on the story of the film with his philosophy that any way is fair for peace. In other words, a great fun and complementary team emerged from a handful of C-class characters.
To the MCU Seeking Mastery, There’s Violence Here
I told you it was amazing that James Gunn came out from under the yoke. The fact that the movie was released as 18+ increased the level of brutality quite a lot. It would be unreasonable for a handful of bad guys to go on a mission to be the epitome of goodness anyway. The creative team, who grasped the essence of the event very well, never used their hands with cowardice. King Shark, who eats people as nom nom, the bloodsport and Peacemaker fight in the coolest way to kill, and the shy Polka-Dot Man with mother problems, he follows some very creative and bloody ways to kill someone. So we’re seeing exactly what we want to see from this movie.
In the humor aspect of the work, we come across not only physical comedy but also quite creative ideas. The origin story of Polka-Dot Man may sound a bit tragic, but the flaws that emerged from this story had me laughing out loud in a few scenes. Likewise, when the Groot formula, which was captured with King Shark, took a much wilder path, we watched magnificent scenes here as well. The action and humor combo was in place. The jokes placed in most of the action scenes always managed to keep the entertainment dosage of the movie up. Except for the sequence that takes place in a bus scene so that the characters can bond, the tone of humor in the movie has never dropped.
Shine Harley, The Stage Is Yours
Without a doubt, the movie’s biggest star on paper was Margot Robbie. There is a scene where he shines as well, the Punisher’s prison scene in Daredevil season 2 came to mind while watching. However, this time, when Harley was in charge, the killing variety and style were quite fun. Nothing less could be expected from Harley Quinn, who was already quite confused with her ridiculous reactions, outlook on life and wrong boyfriend choices. While James Gunn was polishing him in an operation that Harley would want to be involved in, he also bonded brilliantly with the rest of the team.
This Suicide Squad movie, unlike Harley and the others, was a nice win for DC. Because now there is a well-established Bloodsport character in the universe and he can take part in a more serious movie without any grin. Also, Ratcatcher 2 still has a long way to go. We want to see him in new movies. Each character had their bright spots, of course, not all of them were as tall and flamboyant as Harley, but it would be unfair to say that there was an obvious discrimination in the cast. It’s so much better when this team is together.
My Heart Is Drunk Under The Stars
During a nightclub assignment as well as the bus scene, we started to warm up to the team a lot. While exploring the nightlife of Corto Maltese, we were also learning about the bad of the movie. But don’t expect a plain ordinary villain. The “bad guy” part of the job was undertaken by Corto Maltese’s putschist generals. They are just the tip of the iceberg, those in the background will surprise and delight especially those who follow DC comics closely.
Of course, there are problems and dullness in the script of the movie, but this movie doesn’t promise a “perfect adventure” anyway. On the contrary, he is sent on such a deadly suicide mission because the entire crew is flawed. He tried to extract maximum quality and fun from the character material at hand. Good thing Jared Leto’s Joker wasn’t in this movie, it could break the whole spell. After all, does the Joker do business with such a team? We need him in Gotham, Corto Maltese feels light.
It is also very pleasing that the film does not have huge script gaps. We haven’t seen such a fun movie from the Warner Bros/DC partnership in a long time. We couldn’t see much of a DCEU movie, except for the Snyder Cut, anyway. Along with the Joker, The Suicide Squad also showed that DC can now use the material in their hands in a slightly more 18+ way. Yes, dear Warner Brothers, very good films can be made without bringing everything to the age limit of 13. DC I’m telling you, Marvel you get it. . .
Although we don’t know much about it yet, there is a Deadpool 3 on the horizon and this time it’s a tough team for 18+ comic book adaptations. He might need more help from X-Mansion, maybe his BFF from Canada, Logan, can get a handle on it? (This is my personal dream don’t mind too much) The Suicide Squad has largely brought to life what it wanted to do. James Gunn had said “the movie I had the most fun making” before the movie and this fun was reflected in us. Still, we have higher expectations from him. It was announced that we would see him again under the roof of DC after the third film of Guardians of the Galaxy, I don’t know if it will be The Suicide Squad 2 or another movie, but Gunn set the bar quite high for DC for himself. Let’s give points to this fun movie from the heart. 8. 5/10
I can give . Because even though I watched it late at night, it both woke me up and made me laugh a lot. Hoping for more comic book adaptations like this, bye for now, all of you. (Life saving information: If you become friends with King Shark, he won’t eat you)
